The Wilton Car Coat has a classic A-line silhouette. It’s mid length and fits nicely over other layers. The coat is designed for a regular fit and fits true to size. Take your normal size.
If you prefer a looser or more oversized fit, we recommend sizing up. And if you’re unsure about sizing, check out our size guide above.
To find your best fit, compare our coat measurements to a similar coat or jacket you already own. Lay your coat flat, buttoned up and take all measurements from the outside of the garment and compare with our size chart.
Our model, George, is 5 foot 10 / 178cm, and wears a size Medium Car Coat. She also wears a Medium in all of our other jackets.
Since day one, we’ve never scrimped on a fabric. Finding a great one is normally the starting point to any coat or jacket we design. And Batch No.10 was no different. The Wilton Car Coat is cut from a luxurious gabardine fabric made with 35% cotton and 65% recycled polyester (made from used plastic bottles). At 390gsm, it’s light, protective and just the right weight for the shoulder seasons. The great thing about using recycled polyester isn’t only that the fibres have a lower impact on our planet. But it makes the fabric more durable and helps it retain its colour for much longer, all adding to the longevity of the coat. The fabric is finished with a soft touch, and a PFC-free water repellant coating, so this coat will keep you comfortable and dry if you get caught in the rain. But this isn’t down to luck or coincidence. The fabric has been woven in Italy by Olmetex, who’ve been designing and weaving luxurious technical fabrics for nearly 70 years and they’ve worked hard to keep innovating since then. They’re a mill who’ve worked with luxury brands for decades to make some of the highest quality gabardine car coat and trench fabrics in the world. We’re very proud to be working with them.
Composition: Outer - 65% Recycled Polyester, 35% Cotton. Lining - 100% Cotton. Sleeve Lining - 100% Viscose.
This isn’t a coat you’ll have to wash too often, but when the times comes, we recommend you get the coat professionally dry cleaned so it retains it’s water repellent qualities. If needed, iron on low or ideally, steam to remove creases. For any small stains, we recommend spot cleaning straight away.

FROM SINGLE USE, TO LIFE LONG CLASSIC
When it came to designing our own Car Coat, we wanted to take this classic in a new direction. The design and fit would be as timeless as the icons that came before, but the fabric would not. We wanted something a little more innovative. Something more sustainable, but equally as high quality. The result is a classic gabardine car coat made with a recycled polyester and cotton blend fabric. The recycled polyester makes the fabric more durable and retains its colour for much longer, adding to the longevity of the coat. Not to mention it turns a single-use piece of plastic into a timeless coat that will last a lifetime.
WOVEN IN ITALY
Batch No.10 has been cut from a tightly woven and water repellent gabardine fabric woven by an Italian mill who’ve been designing and weaving luxurious technical fabrics for nearly 70 years.
For the Car Coat, we designed a completely custom button. Each one has been carved, dyed, etched and polished in the UK. They’re made from corozo nuts that are naturally harvested. Unlike plastic, our buttons are non toxic and biodegradable.
As well as being individually hand numbered, each jacket comes with a limited edition label inside illustrated by a new artist each time. This label has been designed by printmaker and illustrator, Hannah Cousins.
THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME
Most people know what a car coat is, but hardly anyone knows why it's called a ‘Car Coat’. Here’s why. The style originates from the early 1900's just after the invention of motor cars. At the time, cars often had open-top roofs so the drivers and passengers needed protection from the elements. And that's when the car coat was invented. At the time, it was simply a long overcoat that would be worn whilst driving to keep everyone warm and dry. In the winter, the coats would be made from heavy wool and lined with fur, and in the summer months they'd be made from lighter cotton or linen. The style caught on in the US and UK and it quickly became one of the most aspirational items of clothing to own. Though the use and materials have changed over time, one thing hasn’t: the name.
A CORNERSTONE COAT
The Wilton Car Coat is designed to be worn up or down, all year round. Whether you're off to a fancy dinner or doing the croissant and coffee run on a slow Sunday morning. It's one of many reasons why the car coat has been a wardrobe staple for over 100 years. It never gets old.
